Vale Rob Hirst. I first saw Midnight Oil way back in my teenage years, they were the best live band I’d ever seen, they remain that, even after the thousands of bands I’ve seen since then. Rob was the power behind their incredible live show. They solidified that many years later in 2019 when I saw them a bunch of times. First up locally at Anita’s Theatre when they had invited Shining Bird to open for them, and then a few weeks later got to tag along on their UK tour as the Oils had invited Bad//Dreems who I was working with to open for them. Those shows gave me great perspective on how truly global the band was, people from all over the world were at the London show. Thanks for the music, rest easy Rob.

The year in local music has already kicked off strong with the album release from Private Wives, another single from the upcoming Pacific Avenue album, and then fresh singles from Crown Street Militia and Chelsea Daghita, two tunes both great but at very different ends of the musical spectrum. Make sure you’re following our Hits From The Gong new music playlist to hear the best new local tunes, and if you are in a band and have just released music, feel free to send it through – jeb@musicfarmers.com
It’s a big weekend of DJ spots, kicking off on Friday afternoon at Dagwood for a city pop and adjacent set, I can finally justify buying all the records on my Japanese trips! That kicks off at 5:30pm. Later that night I’m joining DJ Yutts at Howlin Wolf and then will be backing up at Howlin Wolf on Saturday and Sunday nights, both from 8pm til midnight.
