TOWNS release debut album, Australian Music Prize shortlist announced and Digging out the rock records

Jeb Taylor

Today TOWNS released their debut album sentimental slowdown via Farmer & The Owl/BMG. The duo from Adelaide are such a fun and energetic band and they have captured that live energy so well on their recording. They’ll be heading out around the country to tour in support of the release starting tonight in Perth. You can stream the album below and vinyl copies will be in next week!

Yesterday the Australian Music Prize shortlist for this year was announced. I’ve been part of the judging panel for number of years now and it is always great to talk music with a diverse range of passionate music fans during the judging. It has been a bit of a strange year for Australian music in my opinion with no dominating standouts, but as the deadline loomed to get it down to a shortlist the choice was still difficult. If feel it means any of the shortlisted artists have a solid chance of taking it out this year. The list features shop favourite artists such as Amyl & The Sniffers, Dirty Three and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, recent Coalchella visitor Grace Cummings and some really interesting but under the radar records from Kankawa Nagarra, Rowena Wise and Dobby. Stay tuned for the winner announcement on December 4th.

Audrey Powne – From The Fire
Amyl And The Sniffers – Cartoon Darkness
DOBBY – Warrangu; River Story
Grace Cummings – Ramona
Hiatus Kaiyote – Love Heart Cheat Code
Kankawa Nagarra – Wirlmarni
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Wild God
Rowena Wise – Senseless Acts Of Beauty
The Dirty Three – Love Changes Everything

This Saturday at North Gong Hotel, I’ll be dragging out the stoner rock, heavy psych, alt country and general alt rock records to sound track the Young Henrys x 2 Smokin Barrels takeover at the venue. I don’t get to spin these records to often and DJ Yutts will also be joining me, it runs from Midday til 5pm. If you want to catch me spinning my more regular party hits, I’ll be on the decks at Howlin Wolf as usual both Friday and Saturday nights this weekend.
