Out today is this first time on vinyl release from Nitocris, a vital and important Australian band that existed through the 90’s and early 00’s. One of the first times I heard Nitocris was seeing them on Recovery. For those not old enough to remember, Recovery was a TV show on ABC that aired on a Saturday morning hosting live performances, interviews and other interesting segments. This was the 90’s so the internet barely existed and there were no YouTube or social media. Music discovery was very different and outlets like this were vital for young people looking to discover new music, and equally important for the artists creating it. Not long after I saw them on TV, I bought a copy of their CDEP Hyperland at Phantom Records in Sydney, saw them live a bunch of times and got hold of all their following releases. Some of the tracks from the Hyperland EP are included as the bonus tracks on this release, alongside the full 2000 album that got the band an ARIA nomination. The release features twenty tracks spread across two records, mastered for vinyl by Rick O’neil and pressed in Melbourne at Zenith Records. I’ve issued this via Before Somewhere, an imprint under Farmer & The Owl that is a platform for music preservation, particularly from the 80’s and 90s. On Saturday night The New Christs are playing a rare local show at the Heritage Hotel in Bulli. They ar fresh from a run of shows in Melbourne that included a support with The Damned and will be playing two sets with no support, so you’ll get to hear plenty of classics from the band. If you get along early, Wellness Coach and myself will be spinning records in the Heritage Hotel courtyard from 6pm til 9pm. We’ll be backing up by spinning records at La La La’s for Fun Prison from 11pm til late.
