It’s been a big month for new singles via the Farmer & The Owl label with the recently highlighted tracks from TOWNS and Richie Weed being joined by two more tracks to highlight this week from Moaning Lisa and Hockey Dad. Outside of that there is also a debut single from local heavy hitters Crown Street Militia.
First up, Melbourne’s Moaning Lisa returned with their first new music since 2022 last week. It’s the first taste of their new album and as a re-introduction to the band we all decided to not go with the most obvious single from the record and return with a sprawling, shoegaze, slow burner that is full of plenty of emotion. The track fainter is streaming everywhere now, and you can check it out below. It marks and exciting new chapter for the band!
Yesterday Hockey Dad dropped their third single from the forthcoming Rebuild Repeat album, it’s called Safety Pin and is one of my personal favourite tracks from the album. It’s already been a big year for the band with a North American tour straight into some shows with Ocean Alley and it doesn’t stop there. With the album out in June they go straight into a run of big shows across Australia to launch it before heading over the Europe and the UK alongside Ocean Alley. Have a listen to the tasty new single below and pre order the album here.
If you like things heavy, you’ll want to get around the debut single from local band Crown Street Militia called Deathcrush, which was appropriately released on 4/20. The band features some familiar faces with members of Velvet Elevator and Kaleidoscope in the ranks. It is one of the heaviest and most brutal tracks to come out of the ‘gong for a while, strap yourself in!
This Friday I’ll be heading to Kiama to spin some records at Bouquiniste. I’ll be doing a bit of a different set at this one, leaning heavily on the Around The World vibes where I play tunes from Africa, South America, Asia and the Pacific. If you want to get a bit of a taste of what to expect, the playlist below if is a taste of the Around The World vibes.
Record Store Day happened last weekend and that also meant it was the ten years since local band The Pinheads played their first ever show which was at Music Farmers (in the old Crown Lane space as seen on this weeks feature photo). We tried to get them to do a show here to mark the occasion, but the dates didn’t work out, they did though play a secret show out at Franks Wild Years In Thirroul. Over the years the bands have released a number of records via Farmer & The Owl and I’ve been lucky to travel to SXSW in Austin Texas with them and join them for parts of their European tours through Italy, Switzerland and the UK. They are always a fun time, if you haven’t got all their records yet, check them out here!
