Today I’m spinning Australian and New Zealand records from the 60’s and 70’s across multiple genres for Afternoon Delight at La La La’s. 5pm til 8pm in the downstairs bar, here are some selections from the era.
Hot City Bump Band – Come Together
Australin funk, this one was released in 1974, half covers, half their own tracks, there is some gold on here, there is also some average stuff but overall, a worthy record.
Kahvas Jute – Wide Open
An Australian hard rock/prog album from 1971 that has been very hard and expensive to find, but was thankfully given an official reissue (that sounds and looks great) by Spanish label Outsider last year. We still have some copies in the shop if you’re after one.
Various – Downunder Nuggets
An essentially introduction to the Australian garage/beat scene of the late sixties. It includes many of the best tracks from the time such as The Black Diamonds, The Atlantics, The Throb, The Sunsets and much more. Released by Festival/Warner in 2013, it’s a hard compilation to come by these days.
Megan Sue Hicks – Maranatha
Originally released in 1972, with just a few hundred copies pressed, this impressive folk/rock/psych record became a much sought-after Australian record, although Megan was American. She moved to Australia for a year or two in the early 70’s, recorded this album, moved back to the USA and never released anything else again. Last year it got a well overdue reissue, you can grab a copy now at the shop.
Various – A Day In My Mind's Mind
Basically, the New Zealand version of Downunder Nuggets, it includes tracks from The La De Das, Human Instinct, The Avengers and more. There are a few versions out there, we'll have a used copy in shortly if you're interested.
The Missing Links – S/T
This is a punk rock record well before the term existed. It’s hard to imagine how wild this would have sounded when it was released in 1965. It still holds up fantastically today. Original copies are scarce and expensive, occasionally the more reasonably priced Sundazed reissue pops up.
