Witchskull are the Canberra doom outfit signed to legendary UK heavy music label Rise Above Records. They are heading to Wollongong to play La La La's on Saturday April 18th alongside Pod People and Buzzwagon. Joel from the band took some time out to give us five records that have influenced him.
Your first album. It can be the first record/cd/tape you bought, first album downloaded or just the first album you remember hearing that stuck with you.
Powerage by AC/DC – My dad bought the album in 1978 and sat my brother and I down to listen to it. He said this band is really important…He was right, but as an 8 year old I didn’t know what he was on about! Still my fave AC/DC album.
The album that changed your musical outlook. It can be your most influential, one that led you down a certain path, or had a long-lasting impact on you.
No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith by Motorhead – I heard it in 1982 and it changed my life, I have still never heard another band that totally blew my mind like that, it was instant. Still the toughest live album ever too!
An album that you love but is not as widely known as it should be.
I’ve played with so many amazing Aussie bands since the 80’s and the vast majority of them should have been more widely known in my opinion. Since Witchskull has been going, two of my faves have been The Ruiner and Doorway’s of Time by Butterfly.

The record that drew you in with its visuals. It can be the cover art, a press pic of the band that made you take notice...
Welcome to Hell by Venom – It freaked me out as a kid, so feral and raw in look and sound! For me, it is probably the best metal album of all time if you exclude Sabbath, Motorhead and Priest!
The album you are currently loving the most at the moment.
Really digging Cemetery Earth by Dying Sun, out of QLD…Killer.
