Last Friday Tropical Strength released their second album. With the first one largely being a studio project between Al & Russ, this time they recorded it with the whole Silverbeats band in the studio and it comes through with some impressive results. The experimental psych pop songwriting style of Al is complimented by a solid band that features Russ on keys and backing vocals alongside Jay Drury, Luke Player and Paul McClean. Recorded direct to tape, the feel is a lot more live and spontaneous. Have a listen to the album below and vinyl is on the way soon.
Back when I was young and playing music, one of the bands that we played alongside a lot was Dropping Honey. While I’ve long since put the drum sticks away, Dropping Honey have been playing sporadically over the last two decades and more recently they recorded new music. The first taste of the new music is a brand-new single Branches which is released today, their first new music in over twenty years! The band are an interesting mix of post punk and shoegaze that fans of Echo & The Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus & Mary Chain and the like should check out. They are launching the single this Friday at La La Las alongside Tropical Strength!
Hockey Dad are releasing their fourth album Rebuild Repeat in one month’s time and they have just premiered a film clip for their latest single Safety Pin, it’s one of my favourite tracks from the album and the clip was shot at and around the Servo in Port Kembla, like the first two from the album. The band will back up the album release by playing some massive shows around Australia before heading over to the UK and Europe alongside Ocean Alley.
The next edition of Spinning Around is happening on Saturday June 8th. I’ll be jumping on the turntables at La La Las to spin party favourites alongside a bunch of my friends from Sultans Of Spin, tickets are on sale now.
