Shining Bird announce fourth, Richie Weed album out this Friday & Spunk Records farewell shows this weekend

Jeb Taylor

Shining Bird today announced the release of their fourth album Open Ground in August. I’ve been working with the band for over a decade (this weeks feature pic is one I took of them on tour in Coober Pedy in 2016), and they continue to deliver amazing and unique music, this is no exception, an incredible collection of eight songs recorded by the legendary Tim Whitten. There are a few things that make this release extra special, first up it is the final release on the band long time home label Spunk who are wrapping up after 25 amazing years, click here to read my feature on the label a few weeks back. It will also be the first full length release via the Silhouette Label, a fresh collective set up by Russ and Jim from the Bird that I've been helping with. The label will release their music going forward and that of some related projects and friends. You can pre order the album here and stream the latest single Maia below.

This Friday Richie Weed releases his debut album Strays, we hoped to have it as a vinyl only release to start but due to the fact the test pressing had to be recut, in turn delaying the production, we wanted everyone to hear it, so it will be streaming on Friday, with the vinyl now arriving in a month or so. You can still pre order the vinyl below, it’s limited to just 150 copies!

This weekend is the Spunk Records 25th birthday shows at the Sydney Opera House that also doubles as the farewell to the label, as mentioned before I wrote about that here a few weeks back. The incredible line up features Explosions In The Sky, Aldous Harding and The Middle East, there are still a few tickets left as well. If you want a recap of some of my favourite tunes from the Spunk catalogue over the years, check out the playlist below!
