Record Store Day is comin up, live music announced and some personal RSD release highlights

Jeb Taylor

Record Store Day is quickly rolling around again, and it is always one of the best days in the shop. This year we’re excited for the return of live music in the afternoon, something we haven’t done for the last few RSD events. Joining the party with be Melbourne’s Press Club who are previewing their upcoming new album, while Steve Bourk and his band will also play live to showcase some tunes from his recent album Passing Through. Check out the artwork for the day from longtime shop fried Bodie (El Oso Negro Sign Co).

On to this year’s releases and here are some of my personal highlights. A couple of Australian artists have dug into their live music archives and will release live records from international tours, namely You Am I will release a Hi Fi Way era live show recorded in Seattle, while The Saints release a live album recorded in Dublin.

The international list is extensive as usual and I’m not totally sure of what we’ll get but some personal ones I’ll be keeping a lookout for include Pixies playing Bossanova and Tromp Le Monde live. I’m not usually a huge fan of live records but I’m interested to check this out, oddly Tromp Le Monde was my introduction to the Pixies and even though I’ve grown to love some of the other records more, that album and the time it was released holds a special place for me.

The Fall’s album The Real New Fall is one of my favourites from the iconic UK band. I remember it being released not too long before we first opened the shop so it’s a fairly late release in their discography, but we played it so much back in 2004/2005, but I’ve never actually owned a copy of the vinyl!

Fans of shoegaze/dream pop/brit pop sounds should be tracking down the reissue of Belly’s record King. I managed to find a second hand copy a while back somewhere in Europe, but it hasn’t been reissued for ages (maybe since it’s release) and it is very rare it pops up second hand!

There are plenty more great releases, and we’ll have lots of them from 9am on the day. Bands will play between 3pm and 5pm, hope to see a lot of you through the doors!
