King Parrot are playing the Unibar on Friday December 6th and in the lead up, Youngy from the band took some time out to tell as about five albums that have had an impact on him over the years.
Your first album. It can be the first record/cd/tape you bought, first album you downloaded or just the first album you remember hearing that stuck with you.
The first album I bought on cassette when I was a youngster was George Harrison "Cloud 9" with the iconic single "Got My Mind Set on You"... Impressed that I had such good taste as a 6 or 7 year old lol.
The album that changed your musical outlook. It can be your most influential, an album that led you down a certain path, any record that had a big and long-lasting impact on you.
In all honesty, and it breaks my heart to say this, but it was probably Motley Crue, Dr Feelgood. I was an impressionable 8 or 9 year old and I thought that was pretty damn cool, and my older cousin got me into it. Later down the track when I was 12 or 13 I would say Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, Sepultura - Arise and Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power were all pretty influential on me as a youngster, before moving into all sorts of other directions musically.
An album that you love but is not as widely known as it should be.
I would say one of my favourite non-widely known EP's of all time is by old Melbourne/ex Tassie band Beanflipper's Rodent Ulcer. There's just something about that EP that I have always loved. It has a gritty, nastiness to it that has never been replicated, at least to my ears anyway.
The record that drew you in with its visuals. It can be the cover art, a press pic of the band that made you take notice, ect.
If we wanna talk about press pics or back cover art, then I would have to go with Poison Idea, Feel The Darkness. The cover art is great in itself, but the band picture on the back is so iconic, it's utterly ridiculous, yet so real and authentic. Just seeing that photo I knew I was gonna love that band.
The album you are currently loving the most at the moment.
My favourite album right now would have to be Nails - Every Bridge Burning, I love what they did with their sound and songs, it's just uncompromising and ruthless in every sense. On the more mellow side of things, I've been enjoying the 2 tracks that have been released from Dax Riggs (Acid Bath vocalist) on his new EP called 7 Songs for Spiders. Great tracks and well worth a listen.
