Hockey Dad album & tour, Sesame Girl launch, New Obscura Hail, Women On Wax & Date With The Night

Jeb Taylor

This week Hockey Dad announced the release of their fourth album ‘Rebuild Repeat’ via Farmer & The Owl/BMG along with it their biggest Australian shows to date. We started working with Hockey Dad via Farmer & The Owl pretty much exactly ten years ago and in that time have released three albums, an ep and a live record. They’ve also played countless shows across the world and I’ve been lucky enough to see them grow playing in various cities around the world, check this week’s feature photo from their first SXSW appearance in 2016. From their very early shows to a handful of people at Rad, through to selling out shows at iconic venues in places such as London, Amsterdam, New York and of course some of Australia's biggest rooms. I look forward to everyone hearing this record as I think it is their most mature and also strongest in the songwriting department yet. For this album they enlisted Alex Burnett from the great Australian band Sparkadia on production duties and he’s really helped highlight their songwriting strengths. The album is out in June and you can pre order it here, they’ll be touring on the back of the release with dates below and tickets on sale now.

Recently we made available as a Music Farmers exclusive vinyl the double EP from Sesame Girl and they are launching it this Saturday night at La La Las. If you’re not across the band and are a fan of Alvvays, Soccer Mommy, Beach House and the like, you should give this band a listen. They also bring to mind plenty of sounds from the 90’s era of shoegaze/dream pop such as Belly, Falling Joys, The Sundays, ect. We still have a few copies of the exclusive vinyl available here in the shop.

A longtime favourite songwriter of mine is Sean Conran from Obscura Hail. Sean is amazingly prolific but never waivers on quality despite the huge output. This Friday the new Obscura Hail arrives via Dot Dash/Remote Control and we’ll have copies available in the shop. The first few singles from the release have been incredible and I look forward to hearing the whole thing!

For International Women’s Day this year the women of the Sultans Of Spin DJ crew have put together this incredible event called Women On Wax that is happening at La La Las on Saturday March 9th. The line up that features Chelsey Dagger, DJ Hi Fi(Fiona), Genie x Tappy (Jeanie & Amy), Jebby (Jess) and Spnstrs doing all vinyl sets, all night. The incredible design work was created by the female owned and operated local business Soft Power. Tickets are on sale now by clicking on the poster below.

While on the subject of DJ nights, later on in August we have this really fun one happening called Date With The Night, throwing back to all your favourite noughties indie jams. It is on the Thursday before Easter so you’ll have the next day off. Tickets are on sale here and below is also a playlist of the vibes you can expect.
