Last week I hit Tokyo for some record digging both for the shop and myself. I came across plenty of records from Japanese artists across city pop, prog, jazz, psych and garage, as well as Japanese pressings of some classic albums. The first lot of records are in the racks of the shop now while there are two more big boxes on there way back, they should arrive in November, so keep a look out. My main intention was to pick up records for the store this time, but I did boost my Japanese artist personal collection a fair bit as well (see the pic below). I also managed to find some other records that have been sitting on my want list for some time.
While I was going through my personal pick ups in Japan, I was looking at how many records I have at home and that I need to do some more deep listening at home. I play records a lot, both DJing and while I’m in the shop, but they are very different listening experiences, so inspired by some Instagram accounts, I’ve decided to start going through the collection, giving random records a full listen and sharing memories/thoughts about the record. It will be sporadic, but you can follow my Instagram here to see what I’m listening to.
Carrying on the album theme, the Sultans Of Spin crew have been talking about doing a monthly record listening club for some time and finally this week we are kicking it off. It will be held monthly on a Sunday at La La La’s with food and drink specials as well as a curated Music Farmers stall. The events with feature a DJ from the Sultans Of Spin crew (or a guest) playing the selected album out in full as well as adjacent tunes either side of the album listen. This Sunday kicks off with Jimmy BYO and the Oasis album What’s The Story Morning Glory. Entry is free and it runs 3pm util 6pm.
